How it's made

Product development

In VAU we bring people with different professional backgrounds together who enjoy exploring concepts for artisanal type of everyday objects. This phase involves numerous iterations of rendering, testing materials and prototyping.

Tooling

Once we have committed to a particular product version that we feel good about we move ahead with tooling. We adapt the process to the particular requirements of each product. More often than not this means we are creating a steel mould for die casting ZAMAC, a zinc alloy.

Casting

Casting is a traditional manufacturing technology that dates back thousands of years. Our craftsmen pour liquid zinc alloy into a mould that contains a hollow cavity of the desired shape. The metal is then allowed to solidify.

Hand polishing

The final manufacturing step is tailored to each individual product, in order to emphasise its particular shape.

Quality control

Craftsmen personally inspect each product in order to assure it has been manufactured to our quality standards.
